City of Markham Launches Fully Funded Advanced On-site Health Screening Program for Firefighters

MARKHAM, ON - April 29, 2026 – The City of Markham, Markham Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) and the Markham Professional Firefighters Association (MPFFA) have announced the launch of a jointly funded on‑site health screening initiative designed to support the long‑term wellbeing of more than 300 Markham firefighters.

The City is the first in the Greater Toronto Area to offer this form of screening to firefighters at no cost to them.

Delivered in partnership with United Diagnostics Services, the program brings a fire industry‑certified mobile diagnostic lab directly to MFES firefighters, providing advanced on‑site health screening that supports prevention and early detection.

“We are deeply grateful for the dedication and sacrifice of our first responders,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Investing in advanced, on‑site health screening is one way we support those who work every day to keep our community and residents safe.”

“The health and safety of our firefighters is a top priority for us,” said Andy Taylor, Chief Administrative Officer, City of Markham. “This initiative reflects a proactive approach to employee wellbeing and risk management, ensuring our firefighters have the support and resources they need to stay healthy and protected.”

Participating MFES firefighters will receive a comprehensive health evaluation every three years, including a full echocardiogram, diagnostic imaging, and confidential medical reports prepared by board‑certified cardiologists and radiologists.

Key benefits of the new initiative include:

• Earlier detection of cardiac conditions and certain cancers
• Improved, proactive opportunities for timely preventive care
• Simplified access to diagnostics and health screenings for MFES firefighters – with the lab coming to them
• A healthier workforce, strengthening operational readiness and long‑term service sustainability

Firefighters face an elevated risk of cancer due to the lifesaving work we do every day, and protecting the health and safety of our members remains our top priority.”
